On the agenda today …

So my day so far: Wake up. Watch a little bit of Ken Burns’ “Baseball” with the husband. Take Max for a nice 30-minute walk. Shower. Knit a few lines of the baby blanket I’m planning for little winklevoss. Talk to sis on the phone for 20 minutes. Go with the husband to Specialty’s Cafe for an egg sandwich. Walk around U-Village a little. Come home. Pick up Max and take him to PetDaddy for a bath. Get soaked bathing Max. Come back home. Walk to store to pick up free bag of candy and trick or treat bag, and pumpkin. Come home. Carve pumpkin. Have a snack. Read latest issue of “The New Yorker” (specifically the article on Marlon Brando but oddly enough it’s one of the few pieces not on the Web site). Decide to bake cookies. Bake cookies. Take pictures of cookies and jack ‘o’ lantern. Upload pics and update rowing Web site. Update blog. When I’m done with this, I’m going to hit the knitting again. I’m nearly halfway done and will happily post the pics when it’s complete.

Meanwhile, here are the ginger snaps I baked a couple of hours ago. I said to the husband, “I’m baking ginger snaps.”

“Oh. But I really like chocolate-chip cookies.”

“Do you want to walk to the store and buy some chocolate chips?”

“No.”

“Ok then. I’m going to bake ginger snaps.”

Ginger snaps. mmmm. Ginger-y

Ginger snaps. mmmm. Ginger-y. And snappy!

It’s always a treat to bake something with ingredients in the house. Know what I mean?

I’m back! Here’s Jack.

It’s been a while! Sorta busy but things went haywire for a bit, including our home computer going kaput and having to take it to an actual PC Doctor to get it fixed. Here are a few tips. 1) Get a frikkin EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE. It’ll save yourselves a LOT of heartache. Or at the very least it will save you some $$. We finally went out and purchased a small one, the Maxtor One-Touch 4 Mini. We got the smallest one, 160 GB, which is more space than we’ll probably ever need. Had we been backing up all along we wouldn’t have had to go to the PC Doc. So that’s my first advice.

2) Now that I’m at two, I can’t remember the second tip. But that first one, it’s uber-important so it counts as two.

Next. Halloween is coming up. Remember my jack ‘o’ lantern from last year? Well, take a look at this year’s:

The stencil is courtesy of www.yeswecarve.com, and I also posted my pic on their site, too. Take a look. Maybe not as exciting and intricate as some of the other pumpkins on that site, but a feel-good project nonetheless.

The husband complained that the Obama logo looks too much like a logo for a bank. “It’s not scary enough,” he says. So earlier today I did another pumpkin, just for him. It’s not scary, either, but at least it’s more traditional.

I’ll post a nighttime photo later on. Much better, eh. Let me just say, get thee a pumpkin stencil! Makes it sooo much easier. Plus, the Metropolitan Market pumpkins are about 200x better than the QFC ones. And, this one was less expensive, too. One of the easiest jack ‘o’ lanterns I’ve done to date. Not that I’ve done all that many, but here’s to years to come.

The Workout

Here is part 2 of what I started last week. Incidently, it’s 6:30AM and I’ve been up since 3:30. Gotta love this sleep schedule!

Fitness: Fortunately, I raced in San Diego just a couple of months before getting pregnant. (Unfortunately, we lost that damn race, but I won’t dwell. Really). So I was in decent shape coming into all of this. Also fortunately during the first trimester I had no morning sickness, weird fatigue issues or anything. Long ago I knew it was important to keep working out rather than stop everything and sit on the couch and eat bonbons. So in the first trimester, I tried to keep rowing. A little bit in June, subbing in for rowers training for Regionals (which I did not attend). A little more in July, when I had the hankering because the weather was just beautiful. When JPT returned in August I found myself sitting in the launch more than in a boat, so decided it was time to take a break. I had planned to stop rowing mid-August anyway, since I knew the girls would begin training for head-racing season.

You can sorta look through this blog and see what I’ve been up to fitness-wise. It hasn’t really changed. In fact, I got pretty routine, especially with the lifting, thanks to NROL. I’m still doing it, nearly complete, but at a much slower rate. I’ve gone from about 5x a week, of combined practice, cardio + lifting down to 3x a week, depending on my work schedule.

It’s not that bad. There were mornings when I did not want to get out of bed to workout. A lot of mornings. At some point when I wanted to hit the snooze button, though, there was a little bit of motivation that I didn’t have 6 months earlier. It sounds corny but I’d think,”man I should really do this for the kiddie” And so then I’d get up.

Joints are looser now, and injuring the connective tissue in the pelvic area is a concern. The increase of progesterone keeps me breathless more often than normal. My doctor is super. She’s very well aware of the fitness level I had before. She herself is quite fit and can speak from experience. In terms of cardio there is less erging, no treadmill, a lot of elliptical. Strength training is lower weights and higher reps. I feel good, practice common sense, and believe I can keep going at least into the third trimester. Once I get huge, well, we’ll see.

So. Kettlebells Training on Thursday. I like doing this because I can catch up with my rowing buddies a little bit. The other benefit is being able to adjust the exercises according to what I can and can’t do. I can’t really do jumping squats, and some of the core work isn’t good for me, either. It’s easy to sub in different items and still get a great workout. I think/hope I can keep doing this through the end of October. I think the number of exercises I’ll be able to comfortably do will go down, until all I’m doing is squats.

3 sets of 4 exercises. No rest between exercises, but 2 minutes between sets. Each set = 3 x 1 minute per exercise. Got it?

Set 1:

  • KB Clean & Press
  • Bulgarian Split Squats
  • BW Squats (everyone else did burpees)
  • Bridge (everyone else did bridge)

Set 2:

  • Yates Row
  • Wall Ball
  • Plank
  • Cross Squat

Set 3:

  • Step up with Wood chop
  • Erg
  • Push up + T
  • TRX Squat & Row

Stuffed Pizza

You know how certain foods take you back to different times in your past? Well, no doubt a good stuffed spinach pizza brings me back to my college days in Chicago. We ordered frequently from Giordano’s or Edwardo’s or Pizza Capri. It was just routine. The stuff was so frikkin good and a small pizza could feed you for a week. Mmmm. The memories flood back to me when the husband and I enjoyed a impromptu slice from Delfino’s in University Village. The waitress recommended we wait an extra 10 minutes so that we could get the most fresh baked pizza. We were fine with that, and then noticed a minute later that she delivered the last few slices of the ‘old’ pizza to a family of four sitting near us.

Verdict? Worth the wait.

B.E.S.T.

We found out at the last minute that my cousin, Paul, would be in town for a couple of days, so quickly planned an outing. We met at Julias @ Wallingford, a great brunch place that we haven’t been to in ages. I ordered the B.E.S.T. Sandwich, that is Bacon, Egg, Spinach and Tomato. Quite good, I basically cleaned the plate.

Paul took a few pics of us so he could share them with my mom (Paul is married to my cousin, Prudence, and they live about 20 minutes away from my parents down in SoCal). My mom called me last night to tell me she saw the pics. “You’re so heavy!” were more or less the first words out of her mouth. Thanks, Mom. Thanks.

Moon cakes

It’s the moon festival. Time for moon cakes! My dad sent me these this week: Mini Moon Cakes. Thanks, Dad!

Mini Moon Cakes. Yum.

Mini Moon Cakes. Yum.

Traditional moon cakes have a sweet bean paste center, with an cakey-egg yolk type thing in the center of the bean mash. I’m not describing it well, and if you’re turned off, well, no surprise. This is one of those things I’ve grown up with that I just love. The husband, upon trying it for the first time, took a bite and said no thanks. So now whenever I get a box (usually a gift from M&D), I get it all to myself.

This particular box of mini moon cakes (the minis don’t have the egg yolk, fine by me as it’s not my favorite part of the treat) was a variety. The traditional bean paste was replaced with various other sweet centers. Without knowing what the chinese words on each individually wrapped cake was, I discovered pineapple, lotus bean, green tea, some type of berry, and a couple of weird nutty ones. As you can see, I’ve sort of gone thorugh the box of 12 cakes a bit quicker than expected. It’s easy to do that when they are so tiny.

Happy Moon Festival to you all.

Sleepless (and Hungry) in Seattle

One thing no one told me about the pregnancy thing (and let me tell you, people will tell you LOTS about pregnancy. For the most part, I appreciate it).

Insomnia.

I get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Suddenly, I’m up for a while. This is happening to me about once a week now. It’s almost to the point that I’m debating getting up in the night to go to the bathroom because really I just want to sleep. But, you know, it’s sorta bad to hold it in.

So anyway, I’m up. I thought I’d share a thought… about pregnancy. Ha!

Part 1) The weight gain (Part 2 will be the fitness, for another time). I knew it was coming. I read about it. I saw my friends go through it, gaining 25, 30, 35, 40 pounds. But boy was it difficult to grasp when it started happening to me. First, I feared I was gaining weight too fast. Doctor quickly calmed my fears. For my 12-week appointment, I was basically the same weight I was when I saw her the previous year (I managed to shave off 5 or more pounds in that year, but she didn’t seem to care much about that). So, to her, I hadn’t gained any weight the first trimester. Oh, I thought. So then, suddenly I feared I was gaining weight too slowly. In the end, I’m right at the rate I’m supposed to be at, one pound a week. The diet hasn’t changed dramatically, but a few things:

a) Burritos. I ate a lot of burritos in the beginning. The cafeteria at the firm has an Ooba’s. They make a good chicken burrito. I was eating one of these a week, at the cost of nearly $9 a meal (considering I bring my lunch to work 4-5 days a week, $9 is steep for lunch for me). I know burritos are high in calories. Five or so years ago I had to swear off TDM when I found out how many calories are in one of their fish burritos. But then, there I was, happily eating a ginormous chicken burrito, with chips & salsa on the side. Mmmm… while the Mexican cravings haven’t really died off, I have taken a break from Ooba’s.

b) Mochas. I’ve had more tall-nonfat-with-whipped mochas in the past 2 weeks than I’ve had in the past 2 years. Really, I think it’s just the whipped cream that I’m after. The mocha fascination started with the aforementioned insomnia. I found myself with less than 3 hours of sleep in me, having to make it through a day of work. So I treated myself with a mocha (full single shot. no decaf for this girl). Mmm. That tasted good. So I got one the next day. And a few days later. At $3 a day, this is another habit I’m going to stop. Soon.

Speaking of the caffeine, I did stop drinking coffee daily, which was my habit for a looooong time. I had gone from full caffeine, to a half-caf/decaf cup, to one day I went to the coffee machine and just looked at it. Sort of lost my taste for coffee. I moved down to a decaf latte once a week. That was in my first trimester. Just recently (that mocha binge last week, to be exact), I returned to a full caffeine single shot. Not every time I order a drink, but more than before. One shot, or one cup of coffee, once a day, ain’t going to do any harm. I looked it up and Nurse confirmed.

c) Vending machine candy. In the past I’ve allowed myself a trip to the vending machine no more than once a week. Usually it falls on a day when I’m freaking out, stressed, tired or just need something to make it through the afternoon. That something is usually salty, like Chex Mix, Baked potato chips, pretzels, once in a while Snack Wells cookies. Once in a great while those crazy Rugers.

Last week it was $1 for Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups (king size). This week it was a Chocolate-covered Payday. What’s gotten into me? This definitely has to stop. I’m sort of a miser when it comes to spending money on this stuff. Especially because I just don’t need it. Weeks ago, the husband, knowing of my penchant for bad foods, and knowing what it does to me (See “Garbage In, Garbage Out“), sent me to work with healthy snacks: peanut butter & crackers; almonds; buffalo jerky, oatmeal… Well, this week, my stash dwindling, the vending machine won the war.

Healthy snacks. Thanks, dear

So, back to the drawing board. I try to eat well 75% of the time. The husband insists that needs to go up, to 85-90%. It’s his kiddie, too, so I suppose I should pay attention to what he has to say.

But if I want a cupcake. By golly, I’m going to have a cupcake!

French Bread. French Dressing. French Fries …

So I did take some pics of food these last few weeks … The husband came home from the store with tasty sourdough bread, presumably to make a sandwich or two. I took this opportunity to make myself some French Toast.

Since the bread was fresh and not slightly stale (which everyone knows makes for the best French Toast), the toast was a bit mushy. But still, with a little maple syrup swirled on top, tasted pretty good.

Nesting Part 2

Continuing from the previous post … the other change we made at my insistence was to rearrange the living room furniture. I have about a zillion pictures I’ve taken of food, but no “before” pics of our living area. If I find one I’ll update this post. But, basically our couch was sorta in the middle of our living space and it caused the living area, which includes our dining room table, to look cramped. So I basically pushed it so it was against the wall with a window. Moved the bench that was against the wall/window to the wall that is adjacent to our front door. Moved the credenza that was sitting where our bench now sits to an empty wall that is closer to the kitchen. And suddently things opened up.

Max never cared much before, but now enjoys the new living space from the couch.

The one thing we’ll have to figure out … the credenza now sits where we usually put our Christmas tree. The husband insists that the tree will now have to sit in the center of the living area (where the couch used to sit … notice the circle of life going on here). We’ll see, husband, we’ll see.

Nesting

More about this pregnancy stuff. What they say, about nesting … I guess it’s true. Since June we’ve been overhauling the house we’ve lived in the past four years. You already saw the deck that we built (finally!). The past four years I’ve wanted to create a guest room from a spare room in the basement that has done nothing but house a lot of junk. Boxes that we’ve not unpacked since we moved in four years ago. Here’s a hint … if you haven’t had the need for something in an unpacked box for four years, you are probably okay with getting rid of it.

So, in late June we held our first garage sale. We also sold a lot of stuff on Craigslist. We cleaned out that room, and I have just one box left that I need to go through. We went to IKEA a few weeks ago to buy some closet parts. Nearly straight out of the catalog, although our room dimensions didn’t fit the way the catalog had it. My current closet is in the room that will soon become a nursery. So, I needed a new spot for my stuff. That spot is the future (now present) guest room.

We purchased a futon frame from Craigslist (incidently from a guy who lived in the exact apartment friends of ours lived in 10 years ago. What are the odds?). We bought a new futon mattress from Overstock.com (Hint: $2.95 shipping! Even on a full-size futon). That arrived earlier in the week. Voila. A guest room! Just in time for an upcoming visit from M&D.
