Juice Cleanse, I will beat you (perhaps)

StrawMoonJuice-WP_20130920_002
Beginning tomorrow, I am going to attempt a 3-day juice cleanse with my friend and boss (not to be confused with a bossy friend, which she is not). When the boss’s boss heard about our plans, his advice: “Don’t come to work on Monday!”
On our walk to SBUX this AM, we lamented, “This will be our LAST cup of coffee until Tuesday!”. We both splurged and went a size up. For lunch I twisted my work spouse’s arm to eat at Moksha with me. I had the Lamb Saag Thali with several cups of Chai Tea. My last bit of meat, a pork chop by “the best cooker in the world,” according to the kiddo. And my final solid food until Tuesday may be a small bowl of Tillamook ice cream (Oregon Blackberry)
I say “may” because I’m not sure I’m going to last the 3 days without solid food. And I’m not going to beat myself up if I break down and eat a carrot. Or a steak. Or a piece of cake. Chocolate cake. Mmmm. Chocolate Cake.

Anyhow, I will spend the weekend trying this, and will blog about the experience during or after. Wish me luck.

WODs, plus some Doubleunders bashing

For Labor Day, we did the Filthy Fifty. For anyone keeping track, the was the first WOD I completed at Sound Crossfit, on the day I showed up for a trial class. I only had to do 15 reps per station.
One year later …

… 29:39 or around that.

Here was this morning:

Doubleunders have become my least favorite exercise. Flashbacks to grade school. Whip marks up and down your arms, legs, etc. They are difficult to master. To me they are like bowling. In the first round I look like a rock star, but then I get bored and start whipping myself left and right.

Two Doubleunder WODs in a row ain’t fun. I freak that I smell pee all day. Maybe it’s from sitting on the wrong seat on the bus. But more likely the case it is the smell of humiliation that I am 38 years old, a mom, wife and working professional, and I attend a gym class and do these exercises that I used to do in gym class, oh, and I pee a little bit while doing it.

It can be a sign of something worse, so ladies consult your doctor if have pelvic floor dysfunction symptoms. Though this video is kinda funny.

Artificially Flavored Sugar Bombs

20130825-204347.jpg
Every now and then we get those multi-pack cereal boxes. They generally come with Frosted Flakes, Fruit Loops, Apple Jacks or something. Always Cocoa Krispies, but we never use those. Seeing 8 or so boxes piling up in our kitchen I decided to take action.

For some reason I thought it would be a goo idea to make marshmallow treats with them. Cocoa Krispies Treats. Sounds good, right?

I pulled out my backup bag of marshmallows, melted that butter and shazam, we had some sugary sweetness ready for us.

20130825-204805.jpg

OMG. What the frack was I thinking The first bite I was like, yum! The second bite I was like, INSTANT SUGAR HEADACHE! My brain is frying! I’m going blind!!!! I then gave half of one to the kiddo. I couldn’t avoid it, really, as she helped make them.
Sugar after bathtime = AAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!

20130825-205041.jpg

I took the rest to work. Put a clear warning note on a post-it note in the 16th floor kitchen counter, where I left them (consumption of this product may cause blindness, fried brain, hyper children). A few hours later, they were gone. Ah! The magic of the workplace kitchen.

WODs of August

I don’t record all WODs, but here is a look at a few from this month.

20130824-203748.jpg

I have no memory of the above. I kind of remember the last 50 sit-ups being a big PITA.

20130824-205353.jpg
This was a partner/team workout, which are usually saved for weekend WODs. I think I was partnered with Josie. It is the holds/core work, like plank and V-ups, that are the biggest struggle in workouts like these.

20130824-210423.jpg

Double Unders remain my least favorite thing. I start off looking great. I am most successful if I go single-double-single-double etc. Like in bowling, my arms just get tired after doing them for a while. Then there’s the whole peeing in your pants thing.

20130824-210327.jpg
Coach Jess asked us, what is Special Enforcement Detail, anyway? Nobody knew. For this WOD I put my running shoes on since there was a good amount of running. It made the thrusters really tough.

20130824-210803.jpg
Rowing and running. For the row, here is my 1000m strategy, works well for Crossfit WODs: start 5, high 10-15, shift and shoot for 28- 30 spm. At 500m I start doing high 10s, staying at or below a 2:00 split. The other 10s I hover around 2:03 – :05. At 900m I crank the rate up to get ‘er done. I pulled it out with an avg split of 1:59.
This particular workout got me thinking strategy for a 2K, should I have to pull that off some one morning.

I’ll be out of town the rest of the month, so no WODs til September.

Slow cooker diaries: Grain-free dinner

20130824-202625.jpg

A repeat of Moroccan Chicken. What could be a wonderful paleo dish, were it not for the can of garbanzo beans that goes in first.
Chick peas, diced tomatoes, 1.5 lbs chicken thighs, half can of tomato paste, raisins and crushed coriander seed. It calls for ground but all I have are seeds. I think I did high for 1-2 hours, added I another big spoonful of tomato paste, turned to low. Three hours later, chopped red pepper, a big spoonful of almond butter plus the rest of the paste. Gets it nice and thick.
On the side, some mashed cauliflower and a mixed green salad.

20130824-202727.jpg

Dessert. Apparently Grandma (Gaga) has a blueberry bush in the yard. We picked some. I experimented with a crumble. Or a crisp. Whatever it was, it was an attempt at Paleo and it failed (coconut oil, coconut flour, agave syrup mixture on top. maybe a few chocolate chips). Only some blackberry ice cream could save it.

Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. Sometimes it rains.

tech support!

If a site is hacked and goes down for a week, but nobody has visited to notice, does it really go down?
Well, that’s what happened to me. Took me about 3 days (nights, really, since that was the only time I could afford to fix things), from the point of learning I was hacked (from a someone who was like, dude, your security sucks) to now. Every night I was like:

I guess there is a reason why I pay annual fees to a great web-hosting company. 24/7 tech support that isn’t too condescending when they tell you they’ve found thirty malicaious scripts on your backend. Oh. Whoops. And when they fix other stuff you’ve messed up because you don’t know what an Apache server is. Yeah. Right.

I leave that stuff to the experts. I’ll just be the blogger. Writer. Momma. Okay, then.

So, for anyone who missed me, I’m back up and running. More posts to come.

In the meantime, do you like the new look? That is, the new look, using WordPress’ 2-year-old theme. Speaking of WP, their support forums rock! A little more condescending than tech support by the web host, but, then, what would a community forum be without a few smackdowns.

Run + WOD, 8.5 & 8.8

WOD 8.5

Unrelated to the pic above, I decided to join my friend maggiemo at the Lake Union 10K. It basically is a run around Lake Union, which was an enjoyable run for me when I was training for the half last year. You run across two bridges, see several neighborhoods, houseboats, yachts, seaplanes. You see a lot of other runners as it’s quite a popular route. Also, it’s flat.

On Tuesday I ran three miles, with little warmup. The route is an out-and-back, with a slight incline on the out. 31:10, or a 10:16 pace. For this route I did not track pace, but I listened to an old running playlist. Maggiemo has mentioned she’s around a 10-min miler.

Three days later, one of the options for the benchmark WOD is … a 5k time trial. What the heck so I did it again. The time, I had a warmup, including a heavy back squat routine. Also, no watch and no music, just me and that Gnarls Barkley song in my head. 27:43. The distance was not exact, though both days I went from 55th to 85th and back, more or less. I went out to quickly on the out, and ran with cramps the second half. It was an interesting exercise, no pun intended, running without my usual staples (music and watch).

WOD 8.8

I am enjoying these shorter runs in these new Brooks I got at the Nordstrom sale last month, though.i had my doubts, but Brooks has a way with me.

Why Paleo is a waste of my time, Reason #3

20130805-220138.jpg
Reason #1 was NF milk in my coffee. Reason #2 was the feta cheese in my egg-avocado-spinach salad from Evolution Fresh. But reason #3 is the reason to write home about (or, in this case, blog about): S’mores Brownies. Seriously!?!

The hand model in the pic is my work spouse, EC. We split one brownie, thank goodness. It was delicious. Pinterest win, for sure.
Thanks, Billie, for destroying my will power.

BTW, reason #4 was the ice cream that made an encore performance tonight. Paleo. Why do I even bother?

Paleo pancakes etc.

20130804-155624.jpg
At 6:30 this morning the kiddie snuck into my bed to greet me.
“What do you want for breakfast?” I asked her.
“Maybe a … Doughnut?”
Man. This kid and doughnuts. I know I only have myself to blame. It’s still annoying.

I made paleo pancakes instead.

2 eggs + 1 ripe banana + 1/4 c almond butter. Mix well. Cook as you would a pancake in a pan coated with coconut oil.

Added chocolate chips to the kid’s portion.

And so a day of Paleo began …

Update … This week Met Market has a BOGO Free coupon for Whidbey Island Ice Cream. So… After a successful grain-free day, I ended the affair with a small scoop of chocolate and a small scoop of coconut.

Everyone should be this lucky.

WOD 7.24

Whoa fuzzy picture. Blame it on the weak knees after all those Doubleunders. I took a week off from CF. Gave my body a rest. Also gave my body a bellyache from eating so much. Time to whip myself back into shape. I think I’m about to sign up for another 10K … Stay tuned.
