Five

Today marks the five-year anniversary of my stint at the firm. It is the longest tenure I’ve held at a company in my job-holding years. To celebrate this truly exciting milestone, it is customary to bring in a pound of M&M’s for every year you have worked at the firm. I did not know until this weekend that M&M’s don’t always come in 1 lb bags. Depending on what you get (Peanut vs. Almond vs. Peanut Butter vs. Plain etc), it could be 11 oz, it could be 14 oz, it could be 12.5 oz. I bought all of the different types, including some holiday stuff that was on clearance. Hey, M&M’s are expensive, and if you haven’t noticed, we’re in a recession.

Note, in the pic, the little thing of hand sanitizer. Take the hint and use the frikking Dixie Cups! C’mon people. I still saw some hand grabbers, though. Nasty. I kept a stash stored away as to avoid the grubbiness. I also separated the plain from the peanut. Good for those nut allergy prone kids.

5 lbs of M&Ms

This actually isn’t 5 lbs. I took the pic at around 2PM and by then several co-workers had stopped by for some sweets. Also, I still have a bag left on my desk which I didn’t manage to get into the tupperware (dark chocolate, plain)

Legalize Frostitution

Day 8, stuck here at the house. We ventured out yesterday to First Hill for a doctor’s appointment. While the freeways were clear of any snow, slush nor ice, the roads to and from the freeway were a far different story. First Hill being, you know, hilly, there were several main roads that were closed, so we went the most circuitous route possible to get to Madison and Minor. And, if you think it would make sense for the city of Seattle to, at the very least, plow the streets leading up to oh, I don’t know, a HOSPITAL, well ho ho ho are you way off-base. At least, I was when I said to the husband, “Surely Madison will be clear of snow.” The ride to the doctor’s was bumpy bumpy bumpy. Baby was not fond of the ride, so far as I can tell. We thankfully have a 4Runner with 4WD that got us to our destination, but boy was I nervous about all of the OTHER cars on the roads, like the lame Toyota Corolla in front of us trying to get to Capitol Hill, or the insane Honda Civic that thought it could bypass a “Street Closed” sign on Boren but then fishtailed and ran into the curb. Some great driving going on.

And, I’m not the only one complaining about the poor job the city has done with clearing the streets.

So, that was our only jaunt of the week (not including a two-mile round trip to UVillage over the weekend). Needless to say, we’re staying home as much as possible. As you might have guessed, I’ve been a little stir crazy. I baked cookies last week, intending to give them to some co-workers. Being as how I never made it back to the office, the work cookies soon became neighbor cookies. I made a batch of chocolate chip and a batch of sugar cut-outs, and frosted them with this lame icing from the BHG cookbook. I wasn’t crazy about the cookie dough, either, so I decided to try again.

Snowman Sugar Cookie

For this batch, which I finished today, I used the Best Rolled Out Sugar Cookies. Seriously, that’s what they call them at allrecipes.com. I also found a frosting recipe from allrecipes. It is my go-to site for simple recipes and all-american cooking (i.e green bean casserole).

I had quite a bit of fun frosting these. The frosting is way better than what I used from BHG. BHG was basically powdered sugar and milk. Blech. I sent the husband out for food coloring and added it to the new version, made of powdered sugar, milk and butter (the original recipe called for shortening but I declined. I’m not sure what shortening does to frosting that butter doesn’t)

The toppings I got from Williams Sonoma, on sale. I’m hoping we make it to the in-laws tomorrow for Christmas, so I can give these cookies away. Otherwise I am going to come out of this snowstorm one roly-poly cookie-eating chica.

See more cookie pics on my flickr photostream.

BTW, I am not so clever as to have invented the title of this post. I have to give credit to Cupcake Royale.

Speaking of cupcakes, I imagine this frosting would be incredible on a nice chocolate cupcake. Yeah!

Moon cakes

It’s the moon festival. Time for moon cakes! My dad sent me these this week: Mini Moon Cakes. Thanks, Dad!

Mini Moon Cakes. Yum.

Mini Moon Cakes. Yum.

Traditional moon cakes have a sweet bean paste center, with an cakey-egg yolk type thing in the center of the bean mash. I’m not describing it well, and if you’re turned off, well, no surprise. This is one of those things I’ve grown up with that I just love. The husband, upon trying it for the first time, took a bite and said no thanks. So now whenever I get a box (usually a gift from M&D), I get it all to myself.

This particular box of mini moon cakes (the minis don’t have the egg yolk, fine by me as it’s not my favorite part of the treat) was a variety. The traditional bean paste was replaced with various other sweet centers. Without knowing what the chinese words on each individually wrapped cake was, I discovered pineapple, lotus bean, green tea, some type of berry, and a couple of weird nutty ones. As you can see, I’ve sort of gone thorugh the box of 12 cakes a bit quicker than expected. It’s easy to do that when they are so tiny.

Happy Moon Festival to you all.

Rainy Day Junk Food Choices

Ho Ho via bunchopants on flickrThe other day MSN.com had a link to this story about 12 Food Additives to Avoid, and pictured a tasty chocolate snack cake next to the headline. So, while some people may have clicked on that story to see “what additives to avoid”, all I wanted was a Ho-Ho.

I’ve been thinking about Ho-Hos all week now. And actually, many of us at work have been thinking the same (Perhaps I made it worse because I added a nice Ho-Ho pic as my IM display picture). I was all set to walk over to the 7-11 to see if they had some. Only thing is, it’s raining out, it’s been raining ALL DAY, and I just can’t fathom walking the quarter-mile or so in the rain for a Ho-Ho that may or may not be as appetizing as the thought of a Ho-Ho is.

I’ve settled on a vending machine classic, the Ruger Chocolate Wafer Cookies, but it’s just not the same.

BTW, one must be sure to distinguish a Ho-Ho from a Yodel. A Yodel is from Drake’s. A Ho-Ho is Hostess. Pick your side.

This just in … whimsy & spice has arrived

whimsy & spice

Friends of my brother have recently started a boutique confectioners business. Aware of my fondness for food blogs, Ray sent me the link to their blog right away (why are all these great food blogs out of NYC, anyway?). Sweet fine day is an ongoing tale of a couple starting a family and a business, at the same time. Drool over incredible photos of dulce de leche brownies, and view interesting posts about the trials and errors of creating the perfect marshmallow, the right shortbread cookie, etc. Throw in a few Asian recipes, some photos of very cute kids and you’ve got a reason to check in every day.

So imagine my excitement when Ray informed me that whimsy & spice had opened an etsy shop! As soon as they were available I purchased some caramel-infused marshmallows. Along with it came chocolate marshmallows, and samples of nut and spice biscotti and shortbread cookies. I was so excited I nearly forgot that I eschewed desserts for the rest of the week. Then again, if I eat this for breakfast, it’s not exactly breaking any rules.

I can’t do the food photography justice, so you’ll have to visit their etsy shop, their Web site, or their blog and see for yourself.

Thanks, Whimsy & Spice. I love the marshmallows. I’m bringing them to work, a) to enjoy with my morning cup of coffee, and b) to show off and instruct everyone to get buy their own.

If I lived in Brooklyn I would visit you at the Flea, but since I don’t I’ll continue to enjoy your find shipping services.

By the way, the marshmallows. They taste … like marshmallows. Incredibly light, fluffy and fresh marshmallows. I shall have some hot chocolate tomorrow specifically to enjoy with a light, fluffy and fresh marshmallow.

Birthday Dinner, part 2

And it’s not even my birthday yet! (here is part one)

http://www.flickr.com/photos/chattycha/2411574639/

So here is the deal with the pie. Every year on the husband’s birthday, the husband’s mother bakes him a banana cream pie. Nothing fancy. Literally it is the same pie recipe she’s been making for him for the past 30+ years. It very well might have come from an issue of Redbook or the back of a Jello Pudding package. And the husband wouldn’t have it any other way. Within the last couple of years my birthday also made it to the “birthday pie” list. Now I get a pie on my birthday! Or the day before, which is fine by me. This is coconut cream pie (recipe from Martha, according to the MIL). A coconut filling layered beneath fresh whipped cream. Toasted coconut and shaved chocolate to top it off. Plus, a homemade crust that looks like a REAL crust (unlike some crusts I’ve known). Plus plus, I also received the pie plate that the pie arrived in as a gift. Beautiful stoneware from Crate & Barrel.

And, because we couldn’t just have pie for early dinner/late lunch/whatever it is you have when you eat at 2:30 in the afternoon, the husband made one of his (and my) favorite dishes that he pulls out for guests: gnocchi al romano. Rich cheeses, eggs and milk, magically/scientifically combined with semolina flour then baked/broiled to perfection. The 16 words I just used to describe the dish doesn’t do the actual cooking process any justice. Just keep in mind that on more than one occasion, when cooking this dish, has the husband hurled out expletives and thrown a few pans around the kitchen. It’s intense. But the results are sooo good. In the background of the photo below you can see the ragu bolognese sharing the plate, another specialty he’s prepared on occasion (the pics of the bolognese didn’t come out, but picture this).

I See’s the Light

Thank goodness Easter season is over. We get overwhelmed with candy and it’s just too much to handle. Now I can relax in a candy-free home until Halloween or so. (OK, I do still have a nearly full bag of the best easter candy ever in my hiding spot, but I am so over candy I may not dig into it for another month).

This is where the trouble all started. A pound (or more) of See’s candies, courtesy of the husband’s parents. Mmmmm.

Cute Cookies

As you can tell from previous posts, I have a soft spot in my heart for cookies. Especially those from Italian maker Ambrosetti. Whatever the season or holiday, there is a cookie for it. I found these at MM, which I will be bringing into work tomorrow, to celebrate the (near) end of my jury duty stint. More on that to come. Back to the cookies. These are fun, festive and always tasty. Yes, I am bringing them to work, but the husband and I couldn’t help but give one a try. Don’t worry, co-workers, my hands were clean before I handled these for the three-minute photo shoot. No animals were harmed during the making of this blog post.

Like they read my mind … a pink bunny!

I could see how this yellow chickadee could be just a weird blob if you stare at it long enough.

Plus … Easter eggs:

How sweet it is!

Spring has (almost) sprung

It is beginning to smell like spring around here. We’ve got our rhodies beginning to bloom in the front yard, and we’ve cut some of the hyacinths that recently blossomed in our yard as well.

What better dish to celebrate spring than Pasta Primavera?

The husband treated us with this light pasta dish for dinner tonight. Whole-wheat rotini tossed with olive oil, peppers, broccoli and garlic.

I had a splitting headache, from what I believe was missing my coffee/caffeine fix this morning. So I stopped by the MM for a short latte and came home with dessert, a chocolate-dipped macaroon.
