London Eats and More

So, I was in the U.K. for a week for work. Eight days, actually. I had a few goals, knowing that I’d spend most of my time working … These were the food-related activities I wanted to do:

  • Visit Chinatown
  • Enjoy an Indian food dinner
  • Eat the way the locals did
  • Enjoy dessert. Lots of desserts. Or at least one good one.
  • Go to a British Pub. Enjoy some fish & chips
  • Avoid eating in the hotel if possible. Such a cop out and always too expensive.
  • Find a Starbucks.

Here is a quick photojournal. You can see for yourself how I did:

I didn’t actually go to this one. I just liked the name. So many kitschy-named pubs all over the place. This goal would actually be tough, because I don’t particularly like beer, and I am a bit self-conscious drinking alone.

Fish. Check. Chips. Check. Even a little tartar sauce. Was that too American? Oh well.

I didn’t actually get one of these, but I loved the pyramid. I ended up with a chocolate crossaint instead (pain du chocolat or something like that). It was meh.

You always know where the pubs are around London by the little (or sometimes huge) crowd of smokers standing around outside. That’s right, pubs are smoke-free in London believe it or not. This was a work-related function that I crashed. Made for checking off the pub task easier.

I guess the East End is where it really is at for great Indian food. I didn’t have the time to get out there, but there were plenty of smaller Indian places all over the city, including outside my window. I didn’t go to that one as it was empty nearly every time I checked. This place had folks coming in right after dinner, got a decent review from urbanspoon. I was seated so I could watch their dumbwaiter system in action, which I loved. AND they gave me a yellow rose at the end of my meal. Is that supposed to signify something? Rogan Josh & Saag Paneer.

This spot (Le Pain Quotidien) ended up as a go-to place for dinner. And once for dessert. It was low-key, oh yeah, and across the street from the hotel. I’m reading “Pride & Prejudice”

I couldn’t help but notice how many people walk and eat in this city. Tons of places all over the city where you can pick up a quick breakfast, sandwich, salad, etc and either eat-in or takeaway. I wanted to be like them, so I found a couple of Pasty Shops at Victoria Station and gave it a shot. Only I didn’t walk and eat. I walked back to the hotel and ate.

Look, British Cupcakes! I didn’t get one of these, though my friend from college who I was able to visit did treat us to some chocolate eclairs from this place. Magnificent!

You can see my reflection in the glass. Lots of women making dumplings in front of the window, to entice us tourists to come in, no doubt. I didn’t have enough cash on me for a sit-down lunch so just snapped the pic instead.

Other places I visited: Wagamama (noodle shop chain); Pret A Manger; M&S Simply Foods; work cafeteria; The, ahem, hotel (breakfast was free, and actually pretty good. I also got lazy one night and ate dinner there. Big mistake as it was the least interesting and most expensive meal I had the entire week, without ordering a glass of wine!) and of course, this “cafe”, which as it turned out I frequented more than once:

For some reason, I was drawn to cappuccinos all week. Must have been a Europe thing. Did you know you get TWO shots in your tall espresso beverage? They do it RIGHT.

So. How’d I do?

Birthday Fun

Some of the fun food/activities during birthday celebration time, then see below for some photo highlights:

  • Blue C Sushi. Now, I know it’s not exactly gourmet stuff, but it is a lot of fun and easy to bring the kid. Of all the things she could have pointed out that went by on the conveyor belt, what caught her eye? The Mighty-O Donuts. Wow. Good thing we were heading to the next item on my list right after lunch…
  • Trophy Cupcakes! I’ve been looking forward to this since my office moved from The Bravern to Lincoln Square. No easy access to Trophy, you see. It was also fortunate that my birthday fell on a Thursday … Chocolate Peanut Butter day. Yay!
  • Shopping. I told the husband that for my birthday I wanted to go shopping. By myself. So yesterday I hopped the bus to downtown and spent a quality few hours with my debit and credit cards. Nordstrom Rack was my main destination, but also toured the Gap, Old Navy, Pacific Place, among others. My main goal was to try on a bunch of pants to figure out what size I am. And what I learned it it all depends on where you go. Great. It was really enjoyable to walk in and out of stores, to try on clothes without having an entourage (i.e. family) waiting for you. Bliss!
  • Zoo! After shopping I took the little one to the Zoo. We mainly just hung out at the Family Farm and we finially got around to checking out the “habitat discovery loop”. Carousel, too. The only drawback to the Carousel was that I took her twice. That’s $4. Which meant four fewer dollars for …
  • Red Mill Burgers. We haven’t been to RM for a while (used to go more frequently when we lived in Ballard, and/or before we had the kid). Sorta forgot that they are a checks/cash only establishment. So I had them ring up 2 burgers, and was there anything leftover I’d buy some fries. Nope. Had we just sprung for one carousel trip instead of two … but how can I not splurge for the little girl? Definitely made the right decision.
  • Cake from Metropolitan Market. No picture. Because I ate it too quickly. Since I came home fries-less, the husband went hunting for something more at the store and came home with (among other things) a slice of chocolate mousse cake. Since I opted out of baking a cake this weekend, this slice definitely hit the spot. Even if it did give me a sugar headache immediately afterwards.

If it’s not obvious from the above list, I’m taking a break from the usual SBD (sort of) while birthday week celebrations go on. It’s the year of the rabbit! I’m a rabbit! So take a guess as to how old I turned on Thursday. Does the littlest one understand birthdays? Not sure, though I don’t think so. We aren’t exactly the “happy birthday to you” song kind of family. I do wonder if she understands that she gets a tasty cupcake when someone’s birthday comes along. (though she often calls the banana muffins I’ve been making “cupcakes”, so maybe not).

Chocolate Peanut Butter to the left, Red Velvet on your right. The toddler picked out the “Samoa” for herself, but I’ve had the Samoa and I didn’t want her bouncing off the walls. So I chose the domesticated Red Velvet for her. She didn’t put up much of a fight:

Here are a few other pics from the birthday festivities:

A Red Mill Burger (just a cheeseburger), which I split with the toddler. That I only had $10 cash on hand (RMB takes cash or checks only) made the decision to forego fries, onion rings and a shake pretty simple:

My birthday beer. Courtesy of the husband:

I originally planned to make Chocolate Guiness Cake. Bought the ingredients and everything. Then yesterday had a change of heart and decided I really didn’t want an entire cake hanging around the kitchen while I return to those SBD times. I told my husband my decision and then said something like, “So you can have that Guiness that’s in the fridge.” He just looked at me as if to say, “Duh”. Ha ha. But, he did find this fun beer for me. Better enjoy it before the weekend festivities are over.

BTW, check out in the background of the beer pic, to the far right, a glimpse of the cute Chuck Taylors I got for L at the Rack. They’re velcro and they are awesome! She’ll have to grow into them but I’m super excited. Why is it I’m buying the toddler stuff on my birthday? Because it makes me feel gooood!

Facing East on the Eastside

It’s nice to take a break from SBD once in a while. Today was break day.

One of the benefits of working in downtown Bellevue … trying different restaurants at lunch (when time permits, of course). A few blocks from the office sits Facing East, a small Tawainese restaurant that offers some tempting small plates. Yelp is all over this place. We headed there early to beat the lunch-time rush. Good idea. Not shown are the sweet potato flour pancake with oyster, egg and vegetables; nor the spiced pork over noodles (what my dining companions enjoyed). We all had a taste of the Taiwanese Pork Burger (amazingly delicious); I enjoyed the Stuffed Fishball Soup and then asked them to pack a dessert to go, Sweet Red Bean Soup with Mochi Balls. Smiling and satisfied.

Next time my parents come to visit the Northwest, we are SO going here!

First foods

Hey it’s been a long while since I posted. I’m back here to talk about food. But not my food. Lily’s food. She turned 6 months this week and we celebrated by giving her her first taste of banana. Yum. It was an incredibly proud moment for us parents. I mashed up some banana and mixed it with breast milk, until it was the consistency of half-and-half or cream. Maybe a little thicker. First I dunked my finger and and let her suck on it. She wasn’t really into it so instead I tried one of those little baby spoons. Boy, she was all over that! She had been watching us eat for weeks now, and every now and then I would give her that same spoon to sort of play with. I’d pretend I was giving her something to eat so that she would put the spoon in her mouth. So yesterday, when the time was right, she knew just what to do.

Atta girl!

Atta girl!

So so proud. We decided to try banana as a first food rather than the standard rice cereal that every doctor mentions. We went to a First Foods class that recommended this. In fact, we learned in class that if Mom (that’s me) eats the same food every day for 14 days, that the food will be come a familiar taste to the baby. Well, it just so happens that I eat a banana nearly every day. So, why not go for it? Bananas are chock full of nutrients and are filling. And they are tasty, to boot.

What foods are up next? How about avocado? Sweet potato? Or something in season, maybe peaches, nectarines … What do you suggest?

Here are some resources, if you’d like to learn more about first foods:

Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack…

The firm took me and my co-workers out to the ball game yesterday. The M’s hosted the Padres and we had great seats … a couple of suites above the Hit it Here Cafe, in Ichiro‘s turf. It was a terrific view, one that normal folk like me don’t get to experience every day (or every decade). If you’ve ever wondered how the high-rollers, um, roll, well I’m here to tell life is pretty good. Open the fridge to a variety of beers and soda pops. Wine also available if that’s your poison. Before the game, munch on buckets of popcorn and peanuts. Sure, it’s typical ball park fare, which is just up my alley, especially when you’re at a ball game.

My pal Mags declared, “Hot dogs taste better at the ball park,” and I couldn’t agree more. In fact, I can’t remember the last time I even had a hot dog. Oh. Scratch that. Other than the dog I enjoyed two weeks ago at Andrea’s graduation bbq, I can’t remember the last time I even had a hot dog (I remember getting a wiener at the Wiener Circle when I was in grad school … could it have been that long?)

hot dog!

hot dog!

Mine was a simple dog. Ketchup, of course. But then I tried to add relish, but the relish they provided was in a squeeze bottle, and instead all I got was relish juice. Oh well. I did not let that deter me from enjoying said dog. A little potato salad and mac & cheese on the side. Tasty. Mags and I continued to scout out the suite, to see if the catered affair would eventually include some type of sweet dessert. But, alas, I needed to leave a tad early to bus it home to see my sweet little baby and feed her some dinner. Sure enough, as I left the downtown bus tunnels headed home, I received a text/picture message from Mags:
how the high-rollers eat

Wouldn’t you know it!
Best of all, the M’s won! 9-3. Ichiro scored a home run to lead off the first inning. Can’t get much better than that (well, I suppose if I was able to stick around for a cookie, that would have been pretty swell, too).

U District Farmers Market

I’ve been meaning to go to the Farmers Market for a couple of years now. It’s no more than a few miles away; there are just some very very very large hills separating us. Anyway, we packed up the babe and finally made the (short) trip. I had hoped to get some blueberries, but apparently the big seasonal things were cherries and strawberries. So I bit. The cherries were Tietons (never heard of them). For both vendors, sad to admit, I remember neither of the names of the farms.

yay summer!

Both were incredibly tasty. Fresh, ripe and juicy, with just the right amount of sweetness. Worth the exorbitant prices I paid for them. From what I can tell, the prices at this market aren’t necessarily any less expensive than at the grocery store. The berries were most definitely better quality, though.

Here is one vendor at the market that I will say by name. Belle’s Buns. I hear about them all the time in the local food blogs and at last I got the opportunity to have a taste for myself. After careful thought, I chose the cinnamon brioche (the customer before me also ordered one, and the customer after me followed suit).

What a delight. I savored every bite of a soft, pull-apart pastry with rich, sweet dollops of sugary cinnamon stickiness. Plus, the piece itself was not too large, so I didn’t over do it. I did it just right. Makes those silly Starbucks pastries look pitiful.

Lunching in DT Bellevue

Now that I am working in a downtown-city-big-office-building type setting, as opposed to a sprawling-greens-campus type setting, I find myself going out to eat more often. My first day back at work, my team went out to a restaurant called (and I kid you not), What the Pho?. We went because I was crazy about the name. The next day, it was the Rock Bottom Brewery. Most recently, an “under new management” Asian cafe, serving a little bit of everything: Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Korean food. I saw this on the menu and instantly knew it would be mine:

Bi Bim Bop

Bi Bim Bap

Thinly sliced vegetables (shitakes, cabbage, sprouts, carrots, and more), seaweed, beef and rice with the fried egg on top. They serve it to you along with a bottle of some kind of spicy Korean sauce. You squirt the sauce and mix everything up right before eating.

Oh, Bi Bim Bap, how I love you so.

I wish I could remember the name of the restaurant. It’s connected to the Courtyard Marriott on 8th. When I learn the name I’ll update the post. Until then it is called “Under New Management”.

All of these restaurants were no more than an 5 – 8 minute walk from the office. And there are so many more. Got me thinking of those MSG150 guys who spent a year or more visiting every restaurant in the International District.

Perhaps *I* should … nah.

Blue Ribbon Cooking School

So as you know I’m back at work, it’s been a full week now. Just in time to attend my (new) team’s morale event, at the Blue Ribbon Cooking School. We basically gathered together to cook a really great meal and eat together. We had a terrific time and I discovered that cooking and baking is soooo much more fun when there are people hired to clean up after you; when the kitchen you are using is larger than the studio apartment I lived in as a grad student; and when bowls, spoons, pans and other tools are stacked up to the ceiling, available for you to use.

I, along with two wonderful bakers, volunteered to bake the dessert, Caramel Walnut Upside-Down Banana Cake with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream. It was simple and delicious. Here are some pics of our creations. We didn’t create the first two apps … the chefs at the school had them waiting for us when we arrived (along with the exciting beverages)

Of the two, the mushroom/gorgonzola app was much more appealing to my palate.

Lovely beverages, for ChattyCha, who prefers non-alcoholic drinks during work functions.

Grilled Marinated Eggplant, Fresh Mozzarella and Heirloom Tomatoe Salad with Basil

Our first creation, by Matt and Reed. Wonderful. Some people do not like the texture of eggplant. I am not one of those people.

Main entree, plus Lemon Pasta Salad with tomatoes and feta; skillet-glazed baby carrots and sugar snap peas. Main entree credit goes to: MattH, Phil, Stewart, Keith, Jen. Pasta salad goes to Rob and Laura, who I think also did the veggies. Everything was cooked quite well. No disasters with our group.

Caramel and Walnut Upside-Down Banana Cake with Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

Finally, the dessert I mentioned earlier, which I helped bake next to the boss and Jessica. Incredibly sweet caramel sauce combined with a subtle cake made for a sublime dessert. A modest portion (we baked in individual cups) meant no overindulging.

Lovely meal! I didn’t stuff myself and really enjoyed having a nice meal that wasn’t rushed or wolfed down, for once. Eating with a baby at your side, you don’t always get that opportunity.
