Dinner for One

E. asked me to post some dinner photos tonight but they didn’t come out too well. Turkey Pot Pie from Metropolitan Market (free with our coupon, yeee haw!). So instead I thought I’d show you what Max had for dinner tonight. There’s a bit of a ritual. It starts with Max DYING to get his food. Sitting, paying attention, playing the “good” pet, the “look how well I’m behaving”.

Then he eats. Yum! After the first few feedings, we realized he would eat too fast only to barf it back up a few minutes later. Yay. So now we split it up into two feedings. This was his second. Like the jolly roger floor mat we use as his food mat? Courtesy of Archie McPhee. It matches his pirate collar we put on him when we take him to the park. Dinner: Science Diet Lite Food for Adults (Small Bites).

So, how was dinner? See for yourself:

Chinese New Year

Happy New Year! I asked the husband how we should bring in the year of the rat. He suggested chinese food. Brilliant! Rather than order take out or delivery, we actually walked over to our local chinese restaurant, Yummy Cafe, and ate there. It is a special occasion.

Enjoy!

Super Duper Tuesday Dinner

Shortly after our Super Bowl feast (which, let me say, was much more satisfying than the game itself), the husband asked me, “What shall we have for dinner on Super Tuesday?” The expectation, of course, was that we would enjoy a comfort-food type dinner while watching the results trickle through on the telly. Then, the husband could yell at Tim Russert and Wolf Blitzer in between bites.

We settled on open-faced toasted cheese (as opposed to grilled cheese) and tomato bisque (courtesty of Amy’s Organics). The cheese is Tillamook, with thin chunks of Beecher’s Flagship placed on top. The breaded shrimp on the left was leftover from the SBF (Super Bowl feast). Didn’t get cooked on Sunday, and good thing, because it would have only added to the indigestion I felt after that game.

It sounds like I’m not over the Pats’ loss. But I am. Quite seriously, I am.

Anyhow. The results weren’t as fascinating as I thought so eventually we gave up and caught some “Two and a Half Men” reruns. In the meantime, many of my co-workers spent the entire night (and thensome) working to keep this site updated throughout the event that was Super Duper Phat Tuesday.

A shout out

Belinda asked me to give her a shout out. So here it is. One of the greatest things I remember from Bel & Nick’s wedding back in 2003 (besides the amazing reception site, tears … oh and the fun ‘bachelorette’ party…) was the reception food! Two amazing buffets. One, to be honest, I can’t remember what it was. Maybe prime rib? But the other one was filled with southern goodness: chicken, mac and cheese, those comfort foods that are every bit a part of Bel and her southern upbringing.

She also presented Nick with a super-fun groom’s cake, shaped like a golf bag, clubs and all. It was very impressive, and the surprise and amazement Nick showed was precious. Bel, if you’re out there, send me a photo of the groom’s cake. I’d love to post it.

Comfort Food in Vegas

My theory on noodle shops in Las Vegas strip casinos … you gotta have them. I’ve eaten at noodle shops in Mandalay Bay, the Bellagio and the Venetian (twice). I figure all of the casinos now need a noodle shop to cater to the zillions of Asian tourists that spend the big bucks on the tables.

This is Noodle Asia. This time, actually, I didn’t order noodles. Instead I ordered “congee”, or a rice soup, with pork and preserved duck egg. I was seated facing the Sports Book, so was able to watch three or four different sporting events all the while. Not bad.

Denver Dishes

Some final shots of tasty eats while we were in Colorado. Sue made a great Tortilla Soup with Chicken. Served with salty tortilla chips:

And a breakfast casserole … Ham, eggs, cheese, potatoes. The husband and I were the early risers in the household, so our job was to stick the casserole in the oven for 40 minutes, in time for everyone to wake up and enjoy on Christmas Day. Hooray! (These are the leftovers, of course)

Christmas feast

Lasagna - Christmas Dinner, via Flickr

We were in Colorado with my family for Christmas. Christmas dinner was … Lasagna! With sausage and veggies. I got distracted and failed to take photos before dinner. In addition, the batteries in my camera died mid-photo on Christmas day. I borrowed Sue’s for most of the pics. A waaay better camera than mine! Nice job with the dinner.

Sue also made a heart-healthy version, for Mom and Dad (not sure if they were aware they were eating fake sausage and gluten-free cheese. Well, if they were reading this, they know now!). For dessert, Pear Cranberry pie. I made the crust while the sis made the filling.

Tasty.

C’est la vie

Dinner on Wednesday night was:

The husband got a beautiful Dutch Oven for Christmas. Before he could decide what to break it in with, I told him he should make Coq Au Vin. So he did! It was delicious. We (really, he) used a Beaujolis Nouveau that we also got for the holidays. Onions, potatoes, carrots, celery, and of course chicken thighs and legs. C’est magnifique.

I don’t know any French. Just what you see here in this post.

Stir Fry Goodness

I have a thing for cooked celery. In stir fry. Still crunchy, not mushy, and attracting the flavors of the rest of the dish. The husband has taken my penchant for celery in account in this simply stir fry chicken dish. Halfway through dinner the husband looked at my plate and asked if I had gotten enough celery, as there was none on the plate. Of course, I had picked the celery out and ate them first. That’s how I roll.

Week in Review – in food

Busy week. I’m just now updating the site with photos. I’m missing my chicken and dumpling soup (a new offering in the lunch cafeteria) and the husband’s pasta dish (see previous pasta dishes and you’ll get the gist).

Christmas Pear from Metropolitan Market. Juicy and sweet. The sign at the MM said “The ones Harry & David didn’t get” or something like that.

2 eggs (overeasy, or as I used to call them, sunny-side down); sitting on top of a slice of sourdough toast (Fremont, from Essential Bakery), with a couple of tablespoons of Newman’s Own pineapple salsa (medium). Breakfast of champions. Especially tasty after a workout.

Funny story about this. During training at the firm we each got a $10 coupon to spend in the cafeteria. Our goal from that point on was to buy as much stuff in the cafeteria as possible, without going over 10 bucks. The top customer spent $9.19. A chef’s salad (a HUGE salad), Odwalla bar and Vitamin water came to a total of $8.24.
